Tony Hsieh – Author of  New York Times Bestseller, “Delivering Happiness” and Zappos CEO

In 1999, at the age of 24, Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) sold LinkExchange, the company he co-founded, to Microsoft for $265 million. He then joined Zappos.com as an advisor and investor, and eventually became CEO, where he helped Zappos.com grow from almost no sales to over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales annually, while simultaneously making Fortune magazine’s annual “Best Companies to Work For” list. In November 2009, Zappos.com was acquired by Amazon.com in a deal valued at $1.2 billion on the day of closing.

Tony’s first book, “Delivering Happiness,” was published on June 7, 2010, and outlines his path from starting a worm farm to life at Zappos.com. Amp Session:10 minutes Rob Wuebker Rob is post-doctoral fellow teaching strategy and entrepreneurship at the David Eccles School of Business. His area of research is, broadly speaking, how the capital markets finance innovation by supporting entrepreneurs. At the School of Business, he is paid to teach entrepreneurs. So that is what he does. He has an odd arrangement with the Business School – students take his classes for credit if they want, but they are also free and open to the public. Anyone can attend. Rob has deep roots in Utah – three of the venture-backed companies he worked for before moving to full time research and community service were founded here. His focus now is on regional development – making Utah a better place. For him, this starts with you – entrepreneurs – the present and future of the Utah economy. His approach to teaching entrepreneurship is to do no harm to students – the working assumption is that people, left alone, are creative and smart enough to launch businesses, because launching a business is not that hard and the intellectual bar is low Most people who try to help entrepreneurs hurt them, or try to sell them something. Rob tries to avoid hurting entrepreneurs, and definitely isn’t interested in selling them anything. While you might find Rob’s approach to entrepreneurship instruction curious, there is evidence that it works. The David Eccles School of Business has gone from an unranked entrepreneurship program to 16th in the nation in two years. The Foundry – the student-run business incubator hosted by the School of Business – quietly has out-produced (in terms of number of companies formed, amount of revenue generated by company, and number of jobs created) every other university program in the country…on a budget that is, in accounting terms, a rounding error.

LaunchUp Clinics are offered from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, the hour before the official LaunchUp event begins. Here is a brief summary of each:

Tech Clinic
At the Tech Clinic, you discuss your questions and ideas with experienced software startup architects and engineers. These architects and engineers will help you understand what it will take to make your idea a reality. The goal is to help you move forward on the technical aspects of your startup, answer your questions, and give you a chance to meet with practicing engineers.  Among those that will be freely available, include:

These gentlemen will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 to sit down around tables with entrepreneurs to discuss the technical questions you might have about your business ideas. The goal is to have entrepreneurs walk away knowing more about what it will take to implement their idea. Ideally, this includes some high-level architecture, a rough “bigger than a breadbox” effort estimate, and relationships with real startup architects/engineers.

Legal Clinic

These guys can give you their thoughts on issues relating to formation, angel and venture financings, employment, options, intellectual property, strategic partner relationships, customer contracts, exits and other issues that startups regularly face.
